Career Opportunities in Environmental Studies

New and challenging career opportunities exist for those choosing to pursue a degree in environmental studies. Environmental studies is a non-traditional course of study. The programs at the University of Evansville include the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Administration, and a baccalaureate degree selected from any traditional major combined with the Environmental Studies minor.

Graduates with a degree in Environmental Science are well-prepared for a variety of career opportunities dealing with the complex environmental problems that confront our society. This particular degree stresses a strong background in basic science combined with courses dealing specifically with environmental problems.

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science is intended for the person interested in laboratory and field work with air and water pollution control agencies; water and sewage analysis; or the general area of detection, measurement and solution of environmental problems. The interdisciplinary nature of the program and the ability to tailor the curriculum to meet a specific student's career goals provide for range of career choices upon graduation. Graduates can pursue careers in managerial or technical positions as well as post-graduate study. Our graduates are employed by a wide range of businesses and government agencies. Some of the advanced degrees that have been earned by graduates from this course of study include environmental science, environmental engineering, law and medicine.

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Administration prepares the student for an administrative position in an environmentally related field. This degree provides a blend of public administration and environmental science courses with upper level courses in the following traditional disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Political Science, Physics or Sociology.

Graduates in Environmental Administration are familiar with the scientific aspects of environmental matters and the general political, social and economic framework of our society. Employment possibilities exist with many governmental agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, public health, and urban planning agencies. Private companies may also employ these people as liaisons between industry and government. These majors are particularly well-suited for administrative positions that require the writing of environmental impact statements.
