Environmental Studies

About the Environmental Studies Program

Our society is faced with a number of environmental problems most of which we are only beginning to understand. These problems are often local or regional in nature, but may have long term global implications. Studying these problems and suggesting possible solutions involves much more than any one discipline can offer. The physical and life sciences, chemistry, physics and biology, are often called upon to study and explain the problem. Examples include: (1) studying the health effects of a water contaminant; (2) studying the mechanism of transport of a hazardous chemical in the soil, water or atmosphere; and (3) understanding the bioconcentration of a hazardous chemical. However, the sources of such pollutants involve human activities that are driven by social, political and economic forces. Thus, stopping such pollution requires dealing with the problems and limitations of our society. These are just a few of the reasons why the study of our environment is interdisciplinary.

An Established Program. The Environmental Studies Program at the University of Evansville has existed for more than 20 years. Graduates of the program work in environmental positions throughout the country.

A Choice of Degree Programs. The curriculum offers two tracks leading toward an environmental career. The Environmental Science major is designed for students interested in searching for the solutions to environmental problems through both laboratory and field work. Students in the Environmental Administration major study the scientific aspects of environmental matters in political, economic and social contexts.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Education. Environmental Studies, like all majors at the University of Evansville, integrates liberal arts and science courses to ensure students receive well-rounded education. This approach enhances such skills as communicating, problem-solving and thinking creatively and critically.
